About Quotes and Poems

Updated

Quotes and Poems is a small, independent reading site. We collect classic poems for the moments people look for them, such as a funeral, a wedding, a birthday card or a quiet evening. We also collect quotes from classic literature. Every poem and quote shows who wrote it, where it was printed and when.

What this site is

The site is a library of public-domain poems and quotes, with short notes in plain English. It is organised by occasion and topic, with pages on quotes from classic literature and on the poets themselves.

There are no ads at launch, no accounts and no newsletter. We do not sell anything and we do not run contests or publishing offers.

Our sourcing rules

  • Public domain only. We use a classic text only if the author died before 1955 and the text was first published before 1931. A translation counts only if the translator also meets both rules.
  • Author, work and year on every line. Each poem and quote shows the author, the book or poem it comes from and the year it was first printed. For example: Christina Rossetti, "Remember", Goblin Market and Other Poems, 1862.
  • Copied from the source, not from quote sites. We copy lines from a public-domain copy of the original edition, usually on Project Gutenberg or the Internet Archive. Each page ends with a Sources list so you can check the text yourself.
  • Old spelling stays. If the source says "wander'd" or "luve", so do we.
  • Unsure means unpublished. If we cannot confirm a date, an attribution or a line in its source, it stays off the page until we can.

Our own original poems and how we label them

Some pages include short poems and card verses we wrote ourselves, for example birthday and sympathy verses. Each one is labelled "Original - Quotes and Poems" and is never mixed into a list of classic poems without that label.

You may use our original verses in personal cards and in the classroom, with credit to Quotes and Poems. The terms of use explain the details.

What we never publish

  • Song lyrics.
  • Modern poems or translations that are still in copyright. That is why you will not find Robert Frost, T. S. Eliot, Maya Angelou or modern translations of Rumi here.
  • Quotes we cannot find in the original text, including many famous lines credited to famous people on social media.
  • "Do not stand at my grave and weep", because its authorship and copyright are disputed.
  • Reader submissions. We do not publish poems sent in by readers.

Corrections

If you find a wrong line, date or author, please tell us. We compare your note with the original source and fix confirmed errors. Removed or corrected texts will be listed here.

No corrections have been made yet.

Not the former quotesandpoems.com

Not the former quotesandpoems.com - an independent collection of public-domain poems and original writing. Before this site, the domain showed a parking page. Nothing was carried over from it, and we have no connection with anyone who used the domain before.
